Those who dream by day...

Quiet your inner critic, read more books, and grab one of the last two spots at my January writing retreat!

Eight great things worth sharing this week:

  1. NaNoWriMo has officially begun! If you're taking on this juicy challenge I salute you. I also offer up this 5-minute video tutorial on how Scrivener can help you write 50,000 words in a month. Good luck!
  2. "Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night." - Edgar Allen Poe (and many thanks to Scribbling Buddha subscriber Wendy for sending this one my way).
  3. Which reminds me - I don't think I'm going to refer to you all as subscribers any more. It feels so stuffy and impersonal. Would you mind if I called you my Scribbling Buddhas from here on out? Cool.
  4. A study recently release by Carnegie Mellon University showed that banning a book increased it's circulation by 12%. Filed under: duh. And for the record, I still think book banning is a shameful practice.
  5. This week on the blog I wrote about the challenge of dealing with our inner critics. When I’m more mindful of the thoughts running in my head I notice the impulse to erase and rewrite. I can give a little mental bow to that inner critic, say “thank you for your opinion, you can f*ck off now” and just keep writing.
  6. Word Nerd of the Week: Snerdle ~ to cuddle with, to rub faces or noses with. As in: It rained all day, so I stayed home to snerdle on the couch with my kitty.
  7. People often marvel at how much I read, but in truth, it's not that hard to make time for books. I felt super validated in this opinion when I came across this article: In the time you spend on social media each year, you could read 200 books. I wrote my own blog post about this a while back: How I Read As Much As I Do. As I always say: writers read, adjust accordingly.
  8. There are only two spots left for my Next Draft writing retreat and only a few days left to take advantage of the early-bird pricing - including the early-bird bonus of a year-long membership to my Online Writing Community (a $649 value!). Enjoy a delicious, relaxing, productive retreat in January AND get live support (in the form of writing sessions and group coaching sessions) throughout 2024! Sign up now, or if you're curious and have questions, book a time to talk it out.

Happy writing, my friends,

April

P.S. Apparently the word 'irregardless' has been around since the 1700s, says Merriam Webster. I still think it's lame.

You are not the you that you think you are... Starting the year off right. Eight great things worth sharing this week: Have you watched the new Percy Jackson series on Disney+?
