In dialogue with another larger intelligence...

Long words, short meditations, and a poem for English teachers

Eight great things worth sharing this week:

  1. Iron Flame is out! The sequel to the highly entertaining, super sexy, dystopian fantasy sci-fi Fourth Wing is available now. It came out on Tuesday and some versions are already sold out on various platforms, but you can get a hard cover on Amazon. I got mine on and dove right in.
  2. Did you know the words “uncopyrightable” and “dermatoglyphics” are the longest English words in which no letter of the alphabet appears more than once? Thanks to Scribbling Buddha and author Yara Zgheib for sharing this one.
  3. I went live on Instagram on Wednesday to talk about writing unique and interesting descriptions and though I usually try to post recordings of my live sessions, for some reason the old 'gram got fussy and won't let me share it. So I wrote up a blog post tackling the same content. You can check that out here: Lessons in Specificity From “Less.” And don't forget to tune in on Wednesdays at 12:30pm PT to catch me live.
  4. I often hear from people that they have trouble finding time to meditate. If that's you, check out this article: Even A One-Minute Meditation Can Deliver Profound Benefits, According to Research. All it takes is a minute.
  5. In an interview with LitHub this week, Tracy K. Smith (former US Poet Laureate and author of To Free the Captives) talked about how mindfulness is part of her writing practice: "Listening out beyond my own known self gives me the feeling that I am porous, and that I can think in dialogue with another larger intelligence."
  6. This week I added three new VIP Author Platform Days to my schedule for the coming months. If you've been meaning to get your online ducks in a row, but don't know where to start, I can help. In just one day I'll teach you everything you need to know about building (or improving) your website, establishing (or growing) your social media following, sending out a regular newsletter, and generating content for it all in a way that is efficient and fun. Learn more here.
  7. Scribbling Buddha Kathleen Joy Anderson sent me a link to this memorial tribute to poet and author Wendy Barker. The fourth poem "I Hate Telling People I Teach English" is a gem: "I guess I could dub myself / a 'communications facilitator,' but since I’m in the business / of trying to obviate obfuscation, I own up"
  8. In honor of Veteran's Day tomorrow, I'll wrap up this week's newsletter with a shout out to my favorite veteran (and author) Bill Collier, who also happens to be my dad. Check out his memoirs on Amazon.

Happy writing, my friends,

P.S. A friend of mine is running a start-up aimed at creating educational programs around money mindset and personal finance (ain't a writer alive who couldn't benefit from a little money mindset work - miright?). If you have a minute, could you fill out this short survey to help her plan what content to produce in the coming year?
