I'm trying to fill the void in my heart...

New books, wise words, and the debate around cursive writing

Eight great things worth sharing:

  1. I started three new books this week: The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot (because it was on sale on and because a bookseller spoke highly of it), Cold-Hearted Rake by Lisa Kleypas (don't judge me - I'm trying to fill the void in my heart after having read everything Tessa Dare has to offer), and The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan (a recommendation from my dear friend Megan, though in truth I haven't really started it yet so much as queued it up on the Kindle - it's going to have to wait until I'm done with the Rake).
  2. Wise Words from Sharon Salzberg: "If you come at an effort toward change with great rigidity, then any challenge feels like the end of the story, and you're sunk."
  3. What do you do once you've completed that all-important first draft? How do you continue to track your progress and stay motivated? I penned a fresh, new blog post this week that delves into the journey beyond the initial draft.
  4. Nerd Word of the Week: Eldritch ~ weird, sinister, or ghostly. As in: Their afternoon hike took a eldritch turn when they stumbled upon an abandoned graveyard.
  5. Did you know that George Saunders, the renowned author of Lincoln in the Bardo, is a Buddhist? His recent appearance at City Arts and Lectures in San Francisco is not to be missed.
  6. More than a decade after it was phased out of most California schools, cursive writing is making a comeback. People have opinions.
  7. Ear Candy: I stumbled upon an incredible podcast, 'Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso,' featuring the remarkable Jhumpa Lahiri. She beautifully captures the essence of writing, stating, "Why do I write? To investigate the mystery of existence. To tolerate myself. To get closer to everything that is outside of me." I couldn't help but get chills just reading her words.
  8. Just a friendly reminder that I'll be teaching a course on November 2nd (next Thursday), through Hugo House, all about Demystifying Scrivener. This live and interactive demonstration is designed to equip writers with everything they need to know about using this powerful writing software.

Happy writing, my friends,

P.S. The results of last week's survey: 60% of you say you've tinkered with ChatGPT (very much in line with the Pew research study which found 58% of US adults had tried it), and 57% admitted to using it for work (way higher than the general public at 12%).
