Check your local bookstore...

Contract agreements, banned books, and a unique writing retreat

Eight great things worth sharing this week:

  1. Huzzah! The WGA, major studios, and streamers reached a tentative agreement on a new three-year contract to end the 146-day strike. What will it mean moving forward? Forbes quoted my husband (because he's brilliant) in their coverage this week: What A New And Improved Hollywood Might Look Like.
  2. My friend Danielle Roderick, a WGA Award-Nominated writer, is hosting an in-person writing workshop titled "How to Outline Your Novel Like a TV Writer" on October 5th at Zibby Bookshop in Santa Monica. Sign up now, and tell her I sent you.
  3. Next week is Banned Books Week, aimed at raising awareness about historical and current attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. Check your local bookstore for events, or if you're in the Southern California area, you can meet me at the Flintridge Bookstore on Thursday night at 7pm.
  4. "The art of writing is the art of discovering what you believe" – Gustave Flaubert
  5. This week I was talking with my online writing community about setting writing goals for the last three months of the year and tracking our writing. Reminded me of this blog post I wrote about how (and why) to track your writing.
  6. In my ongoing quest for the fascinating and the unique, I share with you today a word that not only tickles the intellect but also awakens the senses. The Nerd Word of the Week is petrichor (pronounced peh-truh-core), which is an earthy scent that arises when rain falls on dry land.
  7. If you follow along, you know I love to read about places that I visit, so I was super excited to find this fantastic list of 50 books, each selected to represent a state in the U.S. I wish there were more book options for each state, but this is a great start.
  8. And I'll wrap up today with a big announcement: Early bird registration for my January retreat is now officially open. I'm calling it the Next Draft retreat, and it's for writers who have (or will have by late January) at least 60,000-word story with a rough beginning, middle, and end. Come soak up the beauty of Ojai, California, enjoy gourmet meals, meditate, and most importantly: get some writing done. Set yourself up for a tremendously successful writing year in 2024. Sign up now and secure your spot at the early bird registration price.

Happy writing, my friends,

P.S. If you're in the Seattle area, I'm going to be up that way (in Edmonds) next weekend for the Write on the Sound conference and would love to get a group of writer friends together for dinner on Saturday night. If you're interested in joining, just respond to this email with "count me in for dinner" and I'll add you to our reservation.
